For weeks now we have been enjoying being in nature for outdoor yoga. Taking our yoga outside enhances our practice. Viewing nature, especially fractals, the organically occuring patterns in nature increases wakeful relaxation and internal focus. Every wonder just why it feels so good to flow through Surya Namasker in the open. You know that feeling when in Savasana and you lie there eyes closed, hands in the earth, it’s a feeling of contentment. Samadhi, bliss even.
What is happening is we are tuning into the patterns of nature all around us. The rhythm of the air, fresh air heightens breath awareness, you may find you are almost dancing through your Vinyasa. The sound of birds, cars, trains, people all around you. You are moving to a rhythm that is set inside, these external sounds become background noise. Your inner gaze grows stronger. The shifting light and shadows of an evening practice, when you begin, close your eyes throughout class, open them. Light and shadow are playing with you, inviting you to move with it. To slow down, to root down. Your brain is being dominated by Alpha waves, allowing you to relax to rest.
When we take the time to observe the natural world, our ever changing feelings towards it, happiness, vulnerability, strength, exhaustion – whatever arises, we meet ourselves with compassion. It’s all part of who we are, being outside allows us to go just a little deeper. Noticing what comes up, no labels, no judgement, no worry, just love.
