Happy International Yoga Day

Today is International Yoga Day, it’s also the Summer Solstice and what a day it has been so far. I am just back from Lisnavagh House where I held a Restore Retreat. Accompanied by a tribe of students who practiced, meditated, journalled, ate, walked and swam as a group of women holding space for one another. Emily at Lisnavagh is a wonderful host, we all felt completely nourished from practice and food. Lisnavagh allowed us the space to tap into our inner child, to lie down with curiosity and stare at a giant yew, to walk down an overgrown path, to swim in the cool water of the river Slaney. To go to the yoga room and meditate when you felt the desire. To practice yoga outside under the vastness of the Carlow sky. We will be back.

This morning we gathered at sunrise for 108 rounds of Surya Namasker to honour the sun, to honour one another and to raise funds for Focus Ireland. The 108 took 2 hours, no mean feat I tell you to flow through all those rounds in that time. As I write this I am drinking tea, allowing my body and mind to rest after a busy few days.

Fractals, the organically occuring patterns in nature.

For weeks now we have been enjoying being in nature for outdoor yoga. Taking our yoga outside enhances our practice. Viewing nature, especially fractals, the organically occuring patterns in nature increases wakeful relaxation and internal focus. Every wonder just why it feels so good to flow through Surya Namasker in the open. You know that feeling when in Savasana and you lie there eyes closed, hands in the earth, it’s a feeling of contentment. Samadhi, bliss even.

What is happening is we are tuning into the patterns of nature all around us. The rhythm of the air, fresh air heightens breath awareness, you may find you are almost dancing through your Vinyasa. The sound of birds, cars, trains, people all around you. You are moving to a rhythm that is set inside, these external sounds become background noise. Your inner gaze grows stronger. The shifting light and shadows of an evening practice, when you begin, close your eyes throughout class, open them. Light and shadow are playing with you, inviting you to move with it. To slow down, to root down. Your brain is being dominated by Alpha waves, allowing you to relax to rest.

When we take the time to observe the natural world, our ever changing feelings towards it, happiness, vulnerability, strength, exhaustion – whatever arises, we meet ourselves with compassion. It’s all part of who we are, being outside allows us to go just a little deeper. Noticing what comes up, no labels, no judgement, no worry, just love.

Are you an early riser, I would love you to join me and some other amazing yoga teachers for some or all 108 Sunrise Sun Salutations on Monday 21st June 5-7.30am to raise funds for Focus Ireland. We will meet at 4.50am to get ready to flow. There will be an option to dip but there will also be tea and coffee available after for all. Click here to join us.

Reconnecting, being together.

Reconnecting, being together with our families, our friends. This weekend has hopefully brought you closer to those whom you couldn’t see or spend time with over this past year. I have travelled home to see my mother, my sisters, for my girls to see their cousins. To walk, swim, play tennis and eat together. To reconnect, it’s the glue that holds relationships together and makes life seem a little easier.

This past year has been so tough, but in my family we are lucky, everyone is still here with us. I am so aware though that nobody has escaped the past year unscathed. How this will manifest for future years remains to be seen. But for this weekend, the sun is shining, there is heat in Ireland and life is good.

Numbers have increased for outdoor in person classes, I hope to meet as many of you as possible in person on the beach, in parks or at an event over the coming weeks. There are 2 places left for the Retreat in Lisnavagh House on June 18th. For more details please click here.

Testimonials

I was so sad and sorry when my last yoga teacher decided to move home to Italy. I thought I would never find a better teacher & then… I found Chris. She delivers a wonderfully unique class which is a marriage of movement and breath. Her class delivers a complete workout for whatever level you’re at, whilst being easy on the body and calming the mind. I look forward to every class and have never felt stronger or better.

Christine conveys an immense passion for yoga. Her energy is palpable. She also has a discerning understanding of how the body works when practicing yoga. I really enjoy her classes which leave me feeling full of positivity!

D. O’Reilly

Christine is a great yoga teacher and I recommend you give her a go.  She is very spiritual but her love of family and her surroundings come through clearly in her teaching - I have wished so many times to be with her in Dublin on the beach, in the studio, in the park! I have loved her classes via Zoom and her early morning Rise and Shine class has been a fantastic start to my day.  She is very knowledgeable and clearly puts a lot into planning each month and each week. Her classes are well prepared and she takes time to explain positions with variations too so that it is suitable for many levels. Having practised with her for 6 months, she keeps her practice interesting with different themes so that no 2 classes are completely the same.  I am loving my yoga journey with her and look forward to it continuing for many years.

N. Roberts

Absolutely love Chris’s yoga classes. It has become a staple part of my week to keep my mind clear and my body right. Chris is a fantastic teacher and I especially enjoy her meditation and reflections during class. Chris herself is such a fantastic person both inside and out and her light is infectious!
