Yoga when you need it

It’s a strange winter we are heading into, one where so many things are uncertain. However there have been a few things I do that have kept me sane over the past year so why change now? Number 1 a daily gratitude practice. That begins when I wake up, it’s early so it’s still dark. Sitting in the dark, just for a few minutes giving gratitude for being where I am in life. For waking up today and greeting with kindness my self right there in that dark space. Gratitude for being who I am, for the people around me

Yoga, a daily practice to clear my head and relieve the stress that builds in my body. Clearing blockages and freeing Prana, honestly that meant nothing to me until I stopped to think why do I do yoga, what exactly am I doing when I make these shapes with my body? Then the answer hit me, I am freeing Prana, becoming unstuck.

A daily meditation practice, some days it’s 1 minute others it can be longer. Honestly I don’t time myself, I just allow this practice to flow and allow myself to be on my mat. To drop into my breath, if I can do nothing else after expressing gratitude then this is what I choose. It helps to ground me, to help me settle. When my mind seems distracted I count my breaths, before long I can visualise my breath coming in, moving around my body inside outside all around me. Then I am at one with my breath, I am breath.

Sea swimming in the Forty Foot, this has been a game changer. There are days the sea calls to me, she sends her signal I can truly feel it. No problem if you think this is barmy and it probably is on a level but there you go. Going to the water, jumping in, feeling my heart pound as my skin tingles with cold. My body is telling me to not stay too long. Wrapping a towel around my cold body when I get out is so comforting.

Yoga online, Yoga in studio, Yoga outside

Finding the wisdom of Winter, this time of year can be tough. Here in Ireland the sun rises around 8am and sets around 4.30pm. It’s a short day, but it’s so important to get the most out of each day. Mother Earth is shedding, flowers die, leaves fall and alot of animals hibernate. The wonder of all this work is when Spring comes and amazing beauty greets us.

Can you mimic all that the universe is doing in preparation for the business of Spring? There is a natural slowing down and it’s the most wonderful time to give yourself permission to try find more rest. But can you slow down and keep active? Yep you can, and it’s so damn nice.

When you practice yoga online take some time to set your space up. Light a candle, turn the heating on, turn your overhead light off. You’re in your own house, make it a special place to practice. Get into the comfiest clothes you have. Make the hour all about you, your practice and your commitment to building awareness and inner peace. Join me Tuesday 9am for Morning flow, a class for all levels but also a place to try out a few new moves. Why not you’re at home! Or perhaps you’re into total bliss, then join me Thursday 7pm for WindDown Yoga. Bring all the props, blankets, candles, eye pillows it gets totally chilled. I’m offering a midweek Wednesday 7pm class for an evening flow, it will be more active than WindDown.

I have some exciting studio news coming for January, we can practice together inside. There will be options for Monday evening, Saturday morning and perhaps Friday lunch. Please let me know what’s the best time for you to practice yoga and I will put a class on the schedule for you. If you would like to join me this Sunday 21st in Lenehan’s there are just 2 places left. It will be an evening of embracing Winter energy and nurturing your heart with a commitment of practice. A time for taking it easy and enjoying good food, chats and love.

Outdoor yoga will continue for the coming weeks. If you’re hesitant about being outside at this time of year, trust me it works. The sun is amazing at 9am on Saturday mornings at Seapoint. It shines on your body to allow you to flow with that winter energy. There is also an outdoor yoga class Saturday at 11am in Herbert park. This is where I started my Outdoor yoga teaching and I love it here. It’s the perfect space to find gratitude. When you feel like damn I hate winter, I hate the cold try practicing gratitude for all that you have. For the body that you have, the house you have, your family, your friends, for you. Practice gratitude for the solstice, and that the days will get longer again after it. When you realise you have so much you become content within yourself. This is my take from an outdoor practice.

Going full tilt around this Earth

Recently we are being fed narratives that create divides. Over the past year we have all shook our heads walked away from confrontations with loved ones, those whose views were simply so hard to understand. This divide of us and others calls on us to return to our highest selves. To honour ourselves and give thanks for being alive. A return inwards, to our true selves.

This past year has also called on us to look at our relationships, those we spend time with or not and evaluate how we spend time going forward. Choosing wisely means being rewarded with true connection, true love and true abundance of strength in the relationships where you choose to invest. Time spent on your relationship with yourself is so rewarding, thinking about, understanding and investing in you. Sounds fun doesn’t it? But so often we don’t do this, but when you put focus on you on what matters most your universe expands.

As we go full tilt around this Earth this attempt at separation calls on us to go inwards. On my birthday week, yes you read correctly birthday week this calling to go inwards, to feed my soul has been truly nurtured. A daily meditation practice, a daily gratitude practice. Weekly burning rituals (more of this to come), yoga Āsana, singing, dancing. Travelling, I was away with my partner, returned to my fold, my children and enjoyed an evening of cake, watching Derry Girls and the fire. Simple stuff but it nourishes me and makes me happy.

The importance of relationships is something to explore in this season of rumination. Dig deep into your own soul, know what feeds it, nurture that and feel your sense of abundance, of love grow from within. This is the sensuous season of love, the season to dig deep within and grow. In the words of Tracey Emin,

The more of You

The more I Love You

Enjoy lovelies x

Testimonials

I was so sad and sorry when my last yoga teacher decided to move home to Italy. I thought I would never find a better teacher & then… I found Chris. She delivers a wonderfully unique class which is a marriage of movement and breath. Her class delivers a complete workout for whatever level you’re at, whilst being easy on the body and calming the mind. I look forward to every class and have never felt stronger or better.

Christine conveys an immense passion for yoga. Her energy is palpable. She also has a discerning understanding of how the body works when practicing yoga. I really enjoy her classes which leave me feeling full of positivity!

D. O’Reilly

Christine is a great yoga teacher and I recommend you give her a go.  She is very spiritual but her love of family and her surroundings come through clearly in her teaching - I have wished so many times to be with her in Dublin on the beach, in the studio, in the park! I have loved her classes via Zoom and her early morning Rise and Shine class has been a fantastic start to my day.  She is very knowledgeable and clearly puts a lot into planning each month and each week. Her classes are well prepared and she takes time to explain positions with variations too so that it is suitable for many levels. Having practised with her for 6 months, she keeps her practice interesting with different themes so that no 2 classes are completely the same.  I am loving my yoga journey with her and look forward to it continuing for many years.

N. Roberts

Absolutely love Chris’s yoga classes. It has become a staple part of my week to keep my mind clear and my body right. Chris is a fantastic teacher and I especially enjoy her meditation and reflections during class. Chris herself is such a fantastic person both inside and out and her light is infectious!
