Ahimsa, a foundation for your Yoga practice

When we take our focus of yoga away from the beautiful shapes our bodies make we realise that there is a much deeper meaning to our practice. Ahimsa, a foundation for your Yoga practice allows you to pause, develop empathy for yourself. “Watch your thoughts, they become words, watch your words, they become actions. Watch your actions, they become habit. Watch your habits, they become character. Watch your character, it becomes your destiny”. Lao Tzu.

Ahimsa, a foundation of your Yoga practice. Ahimsa in asana accepting your body completely as it is, Ahimsa in diet eating what nourishes your body. Ahimsa in thoughts, thinking and embracing positivity, feed the body dopamine and strengthening your immune system. So we know that Yoga is not just exercise but a deep level of harmony within yourself. This way of being allows you to connect deeper to understanding, deeper clarity of thought and mind, deeper creativity. You probably know that feeling of finishing a yoga class and this beauty of feeling that resonates deep within you. The feeling of connection to yourself, to the planet, to all human beings on this earth.

For the month of April my invitation to you is to come to practice from a place of Ahimsa, note how it feels to approach each class with this sense of empathy. Notice if this feeling, this sense of being comes off your mat and into your day. This is yoga.

Runners Workshop Friday 26th at 7pm

In October 2015 I set up a WhatsApp group, there were about 6/7 of us. We ran most Saturday mornings, it was a chance to catch up with friends and grab a coffee after. This turned into a group to meet and train for 10km, then half marathon and ultimately for some (not me) a marathon. Our group has changed over the years, with so many interesting people joining, spouses and even kids joining in. Some of this group will join me for the Runners Workshop Friday 26th at 7pm.

The process of training rather than running for fun is a shift in mind set and also body wise. Rising earlier, eating differently, being more mindful of wearing specific clothes as dictated by the season. But you get up and you do it as the group is waiting and will carry you along, even when you feel you can’t. When you being this journey it’s so exciting, if you’re new to running this workshop is going to be wonderful for you. Kind of like getting driving lessons before you actually drive a car 😉

So calling to mind everything involved in running, I am so excited to have Maria McCambridge along for a Runners Workshop Friday 26th at 7pm. Maria is an Olympian, but also a mother, we will chat about what it is like to train now and before kids. An interesting topic Maria and myself spoke about recently is knowing your limits. As our bodies change with life this is a particular challenge for those wanting to do that elusive marathon or indeed go further.

I will chat to Maria about what motivates her to run and compete, and perhaps it might aid you to reflect on the same. We will look at the importance of breath work, stretching, balance and the core. You will receive yoga exercises to target specific muscles used in running.

To be honest like everything in life, when you run its not about the race it’s about the journey.

Planting seeds for a daily practice

The way we greet ourselves every day, the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves inform our opinions. We all know how important it is to plant seeds for a daily practice of conscious thought, conscious action, conscious reaction, to notice the space between. This is where the work is to be present in each moment of each day. We see this distraction pop up all the time. Writing when thinking about dinner, making dinner while thinking about bed time, going to bed and thinking about tomorrow. As you tune into your breath and become aware of your breathing you allow yourself time to be more present, to plant the seeds for a daily practice. Your daily practice of yoga, meditation & mindfulness help you to be more present.

Cultivating a mindful life is like planting seeds, if you plant an apple seed it will grow and it will bear apples. You can’t just drop a seed in the ground and walk away. Think of the old saying ‘you reap what you sow’. To ensure your seeds grow, they must be cared for. You need to make sure the soil provides a healthy foundation for a strong tree. As all gardeners know the secret to your tree growing strong begins with the soil. Choose the right soil, dig it, feed it and then sow the seeds.

When you apply the same principles of growth to yourself know that if you practice patience you will grow in patience, if you practice acceptance you will grow in acceptance, if you practice self love you will grow in self love. You can’t just decide to be free of these worries and distraction you must commit to the process.

Integrating mindfulness in our lives, making the thousands of tiny choices that result in a disciplined and progressive practice takes effort. For example showing up for your yoga class even when tired or just pissed off with life, meditating when you wake up, or challenging how you react in an argument and calling on the breath to deal with anxiety or panic. By creating these habits on a daily basis you are building a foundation that will grow over time. Like growing your apple tree changing the pattern of the mind takes time. During this process of change you will spend some summer days when life seems wonderful and you positively glow. But like that tree you must be there for the cold winter days. So embrace the task and tend to your practice daily as you grow in conscious awareness of yourself.

Happy International Women’s Day

Happy International Women’s Day to you all. A day to celebrate each one of the nearly 4 billion women living on this planet. It is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality.

Marked annually on March 8th, International Women’s Day (IWD) is one of the most important days of the year to:

  • celebrate women’s achievements
  • raise awareness about women’s equality
  • lobby for accelerated gender parity
  • fundraise for female focussed charities

It is a day to celebrate collaboration as you will see from the many panels of women talk about their stories, a day of uplifting women celebrating achievement. Perhaps you can celebrate a women’s achievement today? I’m going to celebrate Grainne O’Toole & Fionnuala Cloke who set up Skein Press https://skeinpress.com/ to highlight voices and stories traditionally underrepresented in Irish publishing through beautiful, necessary and thought-provoking books. Perhaps you can raise awareness of women’s equality, I’m choosing to honour all you mothers who have shouldered the weight throughout this pandemic of looking after kids while home schooling, looking after elderly parents, looking after sick relatives and often while working full time or part time.

As a daughter, sister, mother, wife, friend of women, I celebrate all the rock star women I know. Happy International Women’s Day to you all xxx

Move through March

It really does feel like Spring, the earth is tilted more towards the sun which means more light in our days and warmer temperatures so ask yourself how can you move through March?

This is the time of year to bring fire into the belly of our lives. During your daily walk, maybe walking a little faster, perhaps going to a run. During practice this is the time to maybe take flight in an arm balance or safely try a headstand. Whatever you do this time of year continue to move through March.

As our yoga community grows online I look forward to when we can be together outside in the park, on the beach and even when retreats are allowed. The retreat I was due to hold last October was sold out and I really do hope this will go ahead this year, with every person in their own bedroom, yoga practice outside and eating outside also. I will keep you posted.

Next Monday is International Women’s day and I am hosting an event with Lisa Davies to celebrate it, there will be yoga, a cocktail, a light bite and chats all over Zoom. I do hope you can join us. Here’s Lisa in case you haven’t met her before

On Thursday 04th at 9.30am Gretta will be hosting an Instagram Live with me if you’re free come along, the class will be a half hour celebration of the Joy of Yoga.

There is magic everywhere at this time of year, go find it x

Testimonials

I was so sad and sorry when my last yoga teacher decided to move home to Italy. I thought I would never find a better teacher & then… I found Chris. She delivers a wonderfully unique class which is a marriage of movement and breath. Her class delivers a complete workout for whatever level you’re at, whilst being easy on the body and calming the mind. I look forward to every class and have never felt stronger or better.

Christine conveys an immense passion for yoga. Her energy is palpable. She also has a discerning understanding of how the body works when practicing yoga. I really enjoy her classes which leave me feeling full of positivity!

D. O’Reilly

Christine is a great yoga teacher and I recommend you give her a go.  She is very spiritual but her love of family and her surroundings come through clearly in her teaching - I have wished so many times to be with her in Dublin on the beach, in the studio, in the park! I have loved her classes via Zoom and her early morning Rise and Shine class has been a fantastic start to my day.  She is very knowledgeable and clearly puts a lot into planning each month and each week. Her classes are well prepared and she takes time to explain positions with variations too so that it is suitable for many levels. Having practised with her for 6 months, she keeps her practice interesting with different themes so that no 2 classes are completely the same.  I am loving my yoga journey with her and look forward to it continuing for many years.

N. Roberts

Absolutely love Chris’s yoga classes. It has become a staple part of my week to keep my mind clear and my body right. Chris is a fantastic teacher and I especially enjoy her meditation and reflections during class. Chris herself is such a fantastic person both inside and out and her light is infectious!
