Enjoying the last of the summer sun

Hello lovelies, it’s been a fab few days here in Dublin. Park Yoga & sunset yoga have been pretty wonderful. There is something so special about gathering together and practicing yoga under the big blue sky. Change is in the air though, while it was 16 degrees for yoga Saturday every so often a cold breeze would come right after a burst of sunshine, a reminder that colder weather is coming.

Last year we continued practicing outside until December, it’s possible just remember to wear a few layers. Sunset yoga will continue for another 2 weeks, I’d love you to join me for these final 2 weeks of yoga overlooking Dublin bay. To book into this class click here.

While the Earth is beginning to get colder the desire to stay in bed and not do so much during winter might creep in. However do try to get up, do some gentle exercise and if you can go outside. This has so many benefits for your well being, the first gentle touch of sunlight on your eyes enhances your mood for the day while also helping you get better sleep that night. So while it can be hard to set a morning routine that involves sunlight even a 30 minute walk or run after your yoga or meditation will set you up for the day. Try this for a winter habit.

Starting the week in the right way

We all know that feeling, rolling out of bed Monday morning the beginning of a new week. Why do we compare Monday to the weekend? Monday means the start of a new week, sitting in a category all of it’s own.

Starting this Monday 05th at 7am we will begin a new type of class. A class to set intentions for how we face the coming week. Intention setting is about long term gain rather than short terms goals. For example I am going to keep my brain active, how – by reading books, journals, articles, taking a gallery tour. I am going to commit to fitness, how – by practicing yoga every day, by going to the gym twice a week, by running. I am going to love myself, how – by telling myself I Iove you every morning, by getting to bed on time each night, by surrounding myself with people who support me and nurture me. These are the types of prompts we will use for our journalling.

So this Monday morning we will take 10 minutes at the start of this new class to commit to an intention. You will write it down, commit to the intention and revisit that intention throughout the week. Then we will move for 30 minutes and take 5 minutes Savasana. 45 minutes to help start your week in a positive and intentional way. Join here

New timetable, new classes, new chances to practice together.

It has been a wonderful summer overall. We had exams in our house (kind of stressful), birthdays (fun) and then holidays (even more fun). I hope you had time to be with those you love, took time to recharge your batteries. Created space to hold a store of happiness and calm that will carry you into the colder season. Just as the seasons change, we too change. The little people in my house are growing up, my body is changing, the garden so abundant in life now will soon be brown and wet and soggy and no longer hold the same image of beauty that it now does.

“I cried over beautiful things knowing no beautiful thing lasts”

Carl Sandburg.

So try not to lament what has changed but carry this store, this memory of summer in your heart for the coming season of change.

So my teaching timetable for the coming weeks will look like this –

Monday

Lots of people want an early morning online class that you can do before work/ getting kids out for school or just because it’s a really good time of day to practice. So here it is. Dipping into Sunrise

The most beautiful time of day. Today at 5am I set off to The Forty Foot to watch the sunrise over Dublin bay. Listening to Andrew Huberman (a neuroscientist based in Stanford) talk about the benefits of getting that morning light onto your skin is quite amazing. You can listen to him here. Basically get some sun (not too much) onto your skin, it will improve your mood, increase alertness, help with better sleep and immune function. Sounds good right?

Each time I come to the Forty foot I take a few moments to watch the rising sun, to take that gentle light into my body and greet the new day. Today I left the Forty Foot and swam at Seapoint, equally spectacular space and gentler and warmer water for my swim.

With lots of fun had over the weekend today was restful, a perfect summer day. Hope you had lots of fun during these summer days.

Coming to class this week?

Back from holidays, not been yet, still around Dublin? Then I would love to see you for practice this week. Thank you so much to Gill for covering the Saturday class. I spent the past few days in West Cork with the 2 youngest kids. It was really beautiful, it can be hard to make time for each person in your life individually but these kids get on really well and it’s a pleasure to spend time with them. They are funny, clever and we had lots of laughs. If you follow me on Instagram I put up a few photos of some of the places we visited. This is the most wonderful weather for outdoor yoga so if you are around Dublin and can make it then join me –

Wednesday 7.30pm at Seapoint for yoga, sunset and perhaps a dip in the bay.

Saturday 11am at Herbert Park. Flowing into Saturday morning while the summer light dapples across your face.

If you are away and want to keep practicing with me then join me live on Zoom –

The Power of Routine (even in Summer)

It’s not all eat, sleep, yoga repeat but it’s not far off. The power of routine is so well documented and analysed and yet most of us fall out of routine quite often. We don’t meditate, don’t make time for yoga practice, don’t eat properly, don’t get enough sleep. You add your thing in here that’s fallen out of your routine… Listen to Rich Roll and Ravi Patel here talk about the power of routine. Alot of this podcast is about your values and aligning your life to those values.

Writing down your values is such a worthy and wonderful exercise. Sticking to those values with practices and people who align to your values now that’s powerful. If yoga helps to realign you then join me this week –

Trust and Freedom in yourself

Sometimes life can be so full of chaos and strife, we get caught in our own & indeed in other people’s turmoil. It could be in work a call from your boss or colleague at 5pm on Friday. The tie to family & kids that becomes so wearing when love is attached to all the emotion. Or as I experienced this morning even on the tennis court, letting my emotions run away with me! We forget that we can simply breathe. Choosing how to respond is a powerful state to embody. It’s also a practice. Whatever is going on, choose to take a breath, to soften your gaze or even close your eyes. Remember the gifts of life that reside within. Try not to judge those who spin chaos around you, instead offer them the gift of patience. Try not to judge yourself so harshly, practice loving kindness to yourself.

Peace, happiness, freedom. These are not gifts some-one else can give you, rather they are gifts that you give yourself. In the words of George Michael a few months before he passed in 2016 –

“Be good to yourself, because nobody else has the power to make your happy”

George Michael, 2016.

Freedom starts when the chains of negative thought are lifted. Reading an essay this morning by Jack Kornfield I was reminded how Nelson Mandela behaved when leaving Robbin island. He left with his spirit and dignity so strong that his spirit changed South Africa and inspired the whole world. And so just like Nelson Mandela you can choose to be strong in the face or turmoil and chaos, choose to embody your ever loving, every kind spirit.

Let’s practice in the sunshine this week

The energy of the solstice is all around us. Today I woke up and could feel the heat pouring in my window. The earth is literally pulling towards the sun at it’s maximum tomorrow. Tomorrow will be the longest day of the year and the shortest night. Typically Celtic people light bonfires, we have come out of long cold dark days and it is a welcoming to newness, to light and hope.

People will gather at Stonehenge, where the stones are gathered to frame the sunrise and sunset. In China the summer solstice marks the start of the Yang force decline and the return of the Yin force.

It’s also the perfect time of year for outdoor yoga and I would love you to join me Wednesday at 7.30pm at Seapoint. The flower circle will be there and also a fire pit. The invitation is to come and write what you would like to leave with this point of the year. Burn the paper, let it go and invite the warm summer energy into your body as you flow into the evening. Bring some paper, a pen, warm blanket, your coat, swimming togs and towel if you are going to join me in the water after. It will be high tide so we can walk around the Seapoint and jump in. Book in here.

If you can’t make that then join me Saturday at 11am where we practice Vinyasa and some juicy holds. Book in here.

For those who want to practice with me during the week please join me online Tuesday at 10am or Thursday at 7pm. Tuesday’s class is all about learning, so if you want to break down poses, fancy trying some new poses or want to build strength in your body this is the class for you. Thursday is WindDown yoga. It’s the perfect way to release. Book into these classes here.

If you are around Friday in Blackrock then join me at 6.15pm for a flow built all around breath.

Have a wonderful week,

So much love xxx

Our Relationship with ourselves

It does strike me quite often when I think meditation or Āsana is the cure to whatever crap I’m feeling, that leaning into practices is great but it’s the sustained healthy practices each day that are actually what nurtures me. So ask yourself you do overindulge at the weekend, but are overly strict during the week? Do you overexercise and then do nothing on some days? Do you practice mindfulness and meditation and then not have healthy relationships? All of these touchstones in life are guiding beacons to where you need to show up for yourself in your daily life.

Just as you move through Āsana and the breath is guided to where it is needed most. Let your intuition guide you as to where you need to channel your energy throughout your day. Over tea this morning with a friend I was reminded of all those times I forget to check in and ask how are you? It means we move further away from tuning to what our own body and spirit needs. So take a moment right now, close your eyes, breathe. Ask yourself what do I need. Be honest, say it whatever it is. Now be curious how can you make that happen. Now realise it. Write it down, become it. When you need to revisit it, throughout your day. Bear in mind you might just need tea, and that’s fine also. Great things happen over tea x

A sustained commitment to self-care, to joy, to being curious and creative in your life starts with each morning. Wake up, feel gratitude for being alive. Tell the people around you how you feel. Meditate, enjoy your morning routine, tea, breakfast. Exercise, practice Yoga, take walks in nature. Feel the power of connection to yourself by creating and practicing great habits. This sets you up for today, tomorrow, this year and all the years to come.

Come practice Yoga with me this –

Tuesday 10am, online Morning flow. A class to build strength, 7 day recording sent after class.

Wednesday 7.30pm Seapoint Sunset Yoga. It’s set to be 19 degrees, can’t wait. We had a gorgeous dip after yoga last week. You don’t have to get into the water it’s also lovely to watch the sunset. Remember to wear layers, bring a blanket and keep warm until you’re flowing x

Thursday 7pm online WindDown yoga, 7 day recording sent after class.

Saturday 11am Yoga in Herbert Park. It’s going to be around 17 degrees for Park yoga this week.

Testimonials

I was so sad and sorry when my last yoga teacher decided to move home to Italy. I thought I would never find a better teacher & then… I found Chris. She delivers a wonderfully unique class which is a marriage of movement and breath. Her class delivers a complete workout for whatever level you’re at, whilst being easy on the body and calming the mind. I look forward to every class and have never felt stronger or better.

C. Horgan

Christine conveys an immense passion for yoga. Her energy is palpable. She also has a discerning understanding of how the body works when practicing yoga. I really enjoy her classes which leave me feeling full of positivity!

D. O’Reilly

Christine is a great yoga teacher and I recommend you give her a go.  She is very spiritual but her love of family and her surroundings come through clearly in her teaching - I have wished so many times to be with her in Dublin on the beach, in the studio, in the park! I have loved her classes via Zoom and her early morning Rise and Shine class has been a fantastic start to my day.  She is very knowledgeable and clearly puts a lot into planning each month and each week. Her classes are well prepared and she takes time to explain positions with variations too so that it is suitable for many levels. Having practised with her for 6 months, she keeps her practice interesting with different themes so that no 2 classes are completely the same.  I am loving my yoga journey with her and look forward to it continuing for many years.

N. Roberts

Absolutely love Chris’s yoga classes. It has become a staple part of my week to keep my mind clear and my body right. Chris is a fantastic teacher and I especially enjoy her meditation and reflections during class. Chris herself is such a fantastic person both inside and out and her light is infectious!
